I have a site that ranked #1 in google for some relevant keywords, but the domain was expired for 5 days in godaddy and i lost my high ranking. Will my ranking be restored after i renewed and my site was back up, or am i basically starting from scratch one it was dropped?

You can still renew the domain after the expiry date. Did the site go offline?

Once it drops and the date resets, start from scratch... according to my knowledge.

However, setting up the same exact site should get things rolling like before.

if the domain was not important enough for you to renew then google doesent think it is important enough to be number 1.

It will take a while before you get your rankings back.
Pay more attention next time or set your domain on auto renewal.

Just renew the domain, and wait for Googlebot to crawl your site. If you already have quality backlinks, it should rank as it used to be.

Wait for few days, may be few weeks, and your site will be back in the old search results.

Thanks for your responses. The site was down for about 5 days because the domain was expired and Godaddy points the nameservers to their parked page. I renewed the domain and the site is back up (i was hosting elsewhere, so once it was renewed the site was instantly back up once Godaddy pointed it back at my host). I will let you know how the ranking goes.

It wont be from scratch, you can get back to the top spot. It would require some effort if there is too much competition on that category of domain.
