It seems this directory business is not as easy as I thought it was going to be. Here I am telling everyone about my new world wide web services directoryhttp://www.urldirect.com.au and even though I thought I corrected just about every problem with most of the new directories launched these days and even that every single person I speak to says that they love the directory, especially the design, it seems most people dont submit to it, not even for free. The directory is making some money however Im really scared that it's not going to pay off in the long run. Im definitely willing to work hard, and I have spent quite a but realeasing a press release with prleap but that was a complete waste of time only giving me about 70+ hits, yet none of them submitted a site. Besides submit sites by myself, what can I do to turn this directory into a smashing success? Is this slow time normal, will things pick up the longer the directory is around? Finally what are some other methods to advertise URL Direct. Thanks.
I have added a pixel advertising category http://www.urldirect.com.au/Promotion/Pixel_Advertising Please note: unless http://www.istoritve.com/ is your own site, I cannot accept http://www.istoritve.com/freepixel/ as sites need their own domain name
submitted ! thanks well i just realized that doesnt prove anything well you got my email and can check anytime if its me
Hmm weird, another paid listing comes through....oh well Im not complaining Maybe people see high value in my links....
How old is the directory? Give it time man. It is a lot of work, believe me, I know, but it does take time.
Nice, clean, refreshing design! Unfortunately I do not have websites suitable for submission to your directory.
Hi, I clicked on your submit/suggest link and my first impression was that you only accept paid listings... seeing the 2 paypal buttons there. After that I noticed the "Free Listings Available" in the section above it. Perhaps if you moved that down below the second paypal button you may get more people submitting... just a thought. I'm sure it will pick up in time.
Thanks for that suggestion, I have been meaning to fix the submit page and make it more attractive....and great idea, Im sure I will get more free listings if I do what you said.
Very nice looking directory indeed. However, great design is not a huge factor in success of a site. Very often the more simplistic look is better. Google, Yahoo, WebMasterWorld and many other sites I don't have time to mention are sites that will never win any prizes for design but are the tops in their field. However, with some careful marketing, you can do well. Your site looks very promising.
I think you are restricting your site in some ways though. You should become a general directory i.e. incorporate all types of categories. You will find an explosion in people wanting a link. At the moment its jsut a web directory. nieche directories do not do as well.
No, it's not as easy as I guess you thought it would be. And that's called a "barrier to entry". Directories are "dime a dozen" and I submit to a large number not knowing if they'll last the year or not, but in the hope that when the PR kicks in they'll do my site some good. I'm really surprised that you thought it would be an instant success. I can't think of any business where 1 week from startup you really know how it's going.
I remember back in 2001, if you opened up a yahoo store...you could upload a bunch of products immediately, have a very shitty design and get free traffic (from yahoo shopping only of course) and make sales. It was a pretty good indicator of how well a site would do once its "completed". I had a site that was under construction for 2 months, but I had uploaded all of the products and I was doing at least some business every day. Amazed me that people would buy from such an ugly site. Oh well. Too bad yahoo shopping sucks now
