I have reached 1000 posts so I thought I might contribute some personal observations of mine and hopefully this will be an aid to many visitors. One sure way to get your site ranked in the search engines is buy getting inbound links. Links are kind of like a site voting for your site by linking to you. There are some good and some bad things you can do to get inbound links. They are as follows… Good Ideas: Submit your site to directories for inclusion in a category related to yours. Write articles about your site and submit it to sites to be posted. You should have a link to your site in the article. Provide good, original material on your site. People will then want to link to your site. Exchange links with sites that contain relevant content. Bad Ideas: Site wide cross-linking can get you penalized as it may be viewed as artificially building link popularity. Exchanging links with sites that have unrelated content. Using link farms and other link building schemes. The best plan when building link popularity is to just do it yourself. If you outsource it, make sure it is to someone you can trust. That person should be willing to discuss the methods they are going to use to build your link popularity. If anyone wants to add to the good or bad ideas, please do.
That's some good common-sense stuff you have to say. Thanks. I really don't agree with your point about not exchanging links with sites that have unrelated content. 1. Sites are usually not about just one topic, they have many topics and I truly doubt there is any way the SEs can really define "related content" and penalize links that are "unrelated". For example, if I have a site about car wheels and rims and link to a site about linguistics, that could be very valid, maybe there was a discussion on the name of some japanese rims and the link is in context for the user, but the SE? What's the SE going to think? 2. Also, I still firmly believe that there is no inbound link that can hurt you. Thanks for posting, you have some good stuff to say. I thought I'd help get your thread going with a good polemic.
I guess others must have experienced this before, but I Was thrilled to see that my green rep for you turned you to a double green Truly thrilling. And congrats on 1000. Here is to the next 1000 Ajeet
I have always been kind of cautious on what sites I would exchange links with. Inbound links won't hurt you but outbounds can hurt you. Yahoo seems to have different ideas on what is a good link and what isn't. My advice is playing it safe.
I agree that being cautious is good and that outbounds can hurt/kill you Also, you have a good point about Yahoo, I was mostly thinking of G in the above post.
I've got a question WRT link farms. It boils down to: "what is a link farm" and "how can I avoid them"? For instance, is link-vault a link farm? I hear alot of people here are using it, so I'm guessing that it's not. Thanks!
I think that nobody can tell for sure it is. OR at least there will be someone to say the opposite. I monitored a competitor that used a script to build the links page and I noticed that he is not listed anymore in G. I agree that there might be something else, but it's a big coincidence....
Many people agree that link farms are a bad thing... but I've never seen any examples. Could someone provide a few examples so we know what to look for? TY, digital point members, for being nice to the noobie on the block.
