Hey guys, I had my clients site on page one for his main search term and got a little greedy and tried to give it a boost. I changed the title tag around a bit but kept the main keywords in it. Well his site has proceeded to fall from page one to page 8 in about a week. I changed the title tag back. Is this common? Seems like a huge drop just for a changed title tag. Thanks Bill
I've read several posts from people who lost rankings because they changed their page title. If you were already on page one you should have focused on getting more links rather than messing with the content.
Title is muy importante to Google as far as I can see. It likes to see keywords matched in title and in description - so if you've lost any key terms from the title expect a drop. it's also possible that it's not just the title that's the culprit.... look at what else has changed - for example in search results, has all of page one changed at all?... ie has the whole ranking system shifted?
teidi, he said he uses the same main keywords. But if everything on the first page changed than he shouldn't be very worried. Focus on building links now and don't touch the title again.
I heard about problem with Google position when you modify the page title after indexing and caching too so it maybe really a rule.
Title changes are often tricky. I have seen people recovering ranks when title was restored, so you just need to wait and see if you get your rank back.

The <title> element is the MOST important on-page ranking factor. Changes to it can drastically affect how you rank as you've seen.
