My Blog Fell From SERPS--Getting 25% of Former Traffic

My blog fell from the Google search engine results pages recently. I was getting steady traffic because I ranked very high (often the first page of Google) for at least 20 terms related to tv shows.

Then one day about two weeks ago, traffic stopped coming and I only get about 25 percent what I used to. Pages that used to show up on the first or second pages of Google now are way down.

I've read a lot about why this happens. Some people say it just happens with an algorithm change and some say it may be a penalty. Some say my site might bump back up in a few weeks. As far as I can tell through Google Webmasters I haven't done anything wrong.

Any ideas on what I can do?

If you havn't been spamming google or doing some other shady seo practices all you can do is wait out the storm. It may be temporary and pass over with no problems. Just hope this is the case and keep on doing what you were. Nothing else can save you.

Your competitors are building links faster than you so all you need to do is build more links with the desired keywords as your anchor text! I do not recommend waiting around because you will only drop deeper in the search results!

Okay--I've been working on building more links, which is actually seeming to be pretty difficult. I used to have an Alexa rating of over 1,000 inlinks and now it's 72. Is this a reliable number?

If you've done nothing wrong, just keep doing what you're doing cause other websites might suddenly update their website too and Google might think they are worth more so they put them higher in the SERPs.

What way in this instance should u be building links though as too little will have no effect and too many will trigger a filter?

Just continue getting backlinks from relevant sites. Your competitors might doing well in their link building methods.

Bradley, sorry to hear that :(

I would do as suggested above, backtrack and analyze your activity during the week or two previous to these results.
