    Hi,

I have added my website in different directories and places but when I check for backlinks in google it shows only a few. Can anyone tell me why?

Google always consider good and relevant links so if you are adding your site in 100 directories then it doesn't mean that you will get complete 100 back links and now a days google dose not like directories links so try to get natural and relevant links from good PR sites

Google never shows you all your backlinks http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=34453&query=backlinks&topic=&type=
How do I find out what sites link to me?
To find a sampling of pages that link to a URL (for example, www.stanford.edu), go to the Google Advanced Search page at http://www.google.com/advanced_search and enter the URL in question into the "Links" search box.

Plus you have to consider that with directories, the page your link is on might not get crawled very often.

I think the time period is a key here. You just need to wait for a month or more to see part of them

Google DOES show all of your back-links. But it does NOT show them to the public. You need to sign up for a Google account and use the webmaster tools and look for links. They only show a few to the public that are high quality. But they show all of them to you with your own account.

Links from the Google tool bar don't reflect the correct amount. If you use Webmaster Tools, the external link section will show you a better list.

Natural links are those that are built by you contacting web masters of sites and asking them to link to your site. Quality sites with high PR are better. And the cherry is if the page they link to you from is on the same topic as your site. That's what natural links are.
