I tried this some time ago, it didn't really work. Between the poeple who just copied the <img portion and removed the backlink (exactly like you done with the dog) and the number of PR0 forums it showed up on pulling a ton of bandwidth.. It wasn't worth it.

Very interesting technique but I'm not one to waste my bandwidth on other sites. If the organic links to my images directly affect my search engine rank then the added traffic could possibly pay for the additional resources but I'm not sure the the possible anchor text or what keywords you would rank for would all convert well on ads. Just a thought.

The anchor text would be whatever you had added as the alt text for the image. If you get a few hundred links with the anchor text "MP3 player" then you are going to get better rankings for MP3 Player even if the links are low quality.

Also,in response to sweetfunny, its probably not a good idea to do this unless you have a lot of bandwith. I once allowed hotlinking of a 1.5Mb gif image & it uses 500GB per week even 6 months later.:D The 3000 links with some top quality anchor text are worth $$$$$'s though.

The Wordpress plugin is completed and I'm just testing it now. Hopefully it will be released for download from the blog on Tuesday or Wednesday.

If you want a demo click on the first result in this search and try right clicking the image of the phone.

Sounds like you either have javascript or cookies disabled? It works on most browsers, but not all. :)

When you land on this page the script should bring up a box when you right click (but only if you came via google images).

I will work on a screen capture video. :)

OK, for anyone interested in how this works I have created a video.

    View the video here

The red box shows up when you right click in case you can't spot the right click in the video. I also use a script to break my sites out of the frameset that Google Images uses. This can be added with this plugin.

Wordpress plugin had a couple of bugs so I'm just fixing it before its released.

Hm. Interesting technique, but does it prevent people from editing the html code?

I once had this (rather simple idea):
When a request for one of my images comes in (not originating from one of the sites on my list) I intercept the call, go to that site, scan for a backlink and if it is found the image is spit out. However I decided not to do this, to go easy on my server resources. One could however cache the lookup and expire the cache once a day (thats only one lookup per hotlinked image per day)
Might try your code though, as I am currently blocking all hotlinkers although that could get me lots of links.
Thanks for the idea. Maybe I can come up with a combination of your method and my idea.

On a sidenote, if someone links an image directly, I also intercept the call and put a navbar on the page instead of just displaying the image.

(It appears that this link from DP doesn't send a referrer string, so its not working for me). Basically if there is no referrer, I won't intercept it, since it could be someone browsing my site with a crooked browser. But you can try the functionality by putting this link on your site (in a private area) and clicking it.
Direct type in will always show the image.

I don't really mind about hotlinkers, the servers I use this technique on are all unlimited bandwidth so people can take as much as they like as far as I'm concerned.

This technique is just to catch as many links as possible.:)
