I have worked for someone whose earning was $200 per month. I added high paying niche articles to his site and regularly send some real traffic and now since last 3-4 months his earning is $1,000+ month (i have proof).

So you need to use high paying niches and also bring good traffic. One niche pays maximum $1 per click and on the other hand high paying niche pays easily up to $20 per click ($40-$50 per click some times), so there is difference.

The earning on Adsense is completely dependent on the number of traffic on your website or blog. Publish some good stories on your blog and share it on Social Media and other channels to get traffic. This question is a little bit broad. There are several factors which will influence your monthly earnings. I'll address them:

1. Niche Site. One of the most important factors because it will vary the CPC (cost-per-click) and therefore your earnings. Some niches (like insurances) can make an average of $2 for example, and others (like videogames) as low as $0.10.

Be aware as well that getting traffic for videogame niches is much more easy than for an insurance website.

2. Ads type, size and location. These 3 can be taken as one factor and they will determine the CTR (click-through-rate) or number of click per impression. There is not optimal, but what I can tell you is the more you research and try different combinations, the more you will learn and earn.

Now, we know the theory, but let's go with an exercise:

Let's assume your blog has a CPC of $0.50 and you have been experimenting and you are getting a CTR of 1% which is conservative. With these number and you 200 page views/month the maths are easy:

0.50$ x (200 x 1%) = 1$/day

Therefore 30$/month. Be aware that these numbers are conservative and that you can improve your CPC and CTR and even traffic.

Ad Review Center: Another option you have is to block advert categories that traditionally do not pay much per click. You can use this to block ads for categories that are not relevant to your site – or that you would rather advertise yourself rather than allow AdSense to do so.

Ad Platform: It usually makes little difference whether your blog is shown on desktop PCs, laptops, tablets or cell phones. However, there are cases where cell phone ads can offer a higher CPC, so if you have this option then use it. Make sure your site is available to cell phone searches.

Improve The Quality of Your Site: The higher the quality of your website or blog in the eyes of Google’s algorithms or crawlers, then the higher the AdSense CPC of the ads Google is likely to give you. Work for quality backlinks, make good use of keywords and other on-page SEO and make use of Google+ and other social networking sites. You will then be more likely to be given the higher CPC ads for your niche. The extra work can be worth a lot of cash!
