    Better think of it as Google = 80% of search total, Yahoo (Overture) = 15% and MSN & others = the other 5%

    So if Overture says 1,000, then you know that is only 15% of the total. Therefore, if 15% = 1,000, then 85 * 1,000 / 15 = 5,666.66 = 100% of your search term.

    Google at 80%? that's a little steep. I've seen official stats and studies that have not gone higher than 52%. Google might be the big player, but I don't think they are that big.

    hold up im confused, so is it google is say 52% of 3 times of what overture shows? If overture shows 3000 then it would be 9000 really and google is half of that which would be 4500?

    mmm not exactly
    if google has 52 % share I guess yahoo should be at about 25 % so you just double the OVT score to het the results from google
    keep in mind that this is quite general and for different niches it might be different

    OK,

    WEB PRO NEWS, latest update figures show that:
    Goolge = 47.5
    Yarhoo = 28.1
    Microsoft = 10.6
    Ask = 5.2
    and Others = 5.0

    These are the stats for America only, in GB Google owns about 70% of the market. So, it depends on your target area.

    But, as a rule of thumb, just double it.
    There are no exact figures.

    I agree with the not exact figures statement. My 80% for Google was based on a webminar I attended a couple of weeks ago that talked about SEM and the numbers that they presented had Google at 80%, so I don't know what is the real number. If you check the x10 seminar in Google videos as well, Perry Marshall recommends to actually multiply by 4.

    I read the initial question and the answer is yes.

    Overture (when on advanced match) automatically multiplies your words i.e. widget = widgets and any other plural it also multiplies the match type (broad, phrase and exact). so 1,000 overture words would actually be 6,000 words.

    BTW there's a separate place to post Yahoo questions.

    Relative differences in search volume differ with topic. Google is used by the more internet savvy croud, and you will find searches conducted for just about anything and everything. Yahoo! is similar, though the volumes of very specific searches are far less. I don't know enough about the other search engines to make a comment.

    Overall, you should expect Google search volumes to be between 3 and 8 times more than Yahoo! search volumes, depending on the topic.
