This is an interesting article I read that outlines some aspects of new FTC rules. You can view the full version here http://ftc.gov/os/2009/10/091005endorsementguidesfnnotice.pdf Affiliates this is definitely something that may directly effect you so worth reading. Any affiliate link will be seen as an endorsement and if you earn a commission you will need a disclosure. This is creating a lot of buzz for marketers as fines can cost you up to $11,000...
And so it begins....bit by bit the we will have less freedom on the internet..just like in real life..
That's an oxymoron, or at least a definite maybe Interesting move by the FTC, but I think its more aimed at those high profile sites that get tons of traffic and are influential enough to get given cash or products in return for raving reviews, I don't think its aimed at someone who talks up a product to try and sell it. But time will tell. Cheers James
I can't find the link, but an FTC rep. stated that there would not be fines. You will, however, receive a cease and desist letter.
You are right... I did some research into this and indeed for now the fines are just a myth within community. Here is the link i think you were talking about http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/jen...m/ftc-bloggers-its-not-medium-its-message-0?#. I also came across this article, written by a lawyer who goes on to clarify some of the main aspects of the new FTC rules. Here it is http://www.joelcomm.com/new_ftc_rules_for_testimonials_1.html
Yes, thanks for the correction a oxymoron indeed.. Everyone has one definitive maybe at some point in their life ; )
There's a big post I started about the FTC issue on October 5th. Lots of good links in the thread and suggestions about the issue including a free Disclosure Policy Generator you can use for your site/blog. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1521748
