From a business-standpoint, the number one lesson is to just be 100% honest in all of your marketing material. Honesty goes a very long way and keeps the FTC and other government officials (that are there to protect consumers) at bay.

There are other lessons to learn from others mistakes that cost them the attention and conviction of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the USA. It is important to know that when you market your product or service that you do so in a way that:
    • Does NOT Mislead Consumers - Don't lie, exaggerate the truth, or do anything that would mislead consumers into thinking they are getting one thing when they are not.
    • Does NOT Present False claims - So state only what you know for a fact your product and/or service can deliver.
I know people lie for the sake of getting money because they feel if they did not, that they'd make not as much or nothing at all. But lying in any way, shape or form, can be a costly thing for you in the long-run. So just do it right the first time and be 100% honest. People have no problems running to the FTC, SEC, and any other government agency that handles consumer complaints against businesses. And it's much easier to do in this day and age with the Internet and technology. By easy, I mean it can take less than 5 minutes to file a complaint.

So while you are working on your marketing material, don't let your business become one that gets the negative attention of the government officials. Individuals get the attention of the FTC, SEC, etc., just as quickly as major corporations. I've seen it happen even at forums - particularly internet marketing and money making forums. ONe of my friends was contacted by the SEC to be a witness against an individual on a forum. So for your own sake, do everything you can to be honest in your marketing material, and the government will have no reason to come after you.
