Muslim call to adopt Mecca time

Muslim scientists and clerics have called for the adoption of Mecca time to replace GMT, arguing that the Saudi city is the true centre of the Earth.

Mecca is the direction all Muslims face when they perform their daily prayers.

The call was issued at a conference held in the Gulf state of Qatar under the title: Mecca, the Centre of the Earth, Theory and Practice.

One geologist argued that unlike other longitudes, Mecca's was in perfect alignment to magnetic north.

He said the English had imposed GMT on the rest of the world by force when Britain was a big colonial power, and it was about time that changed.

To be honest, they have a point, Mecca is, scientifically, the center of the earth. I wonder if they will ever change the time zones though, seems like it would be too much hassle.

In what scientific way is Mecca the center of the Earth?

Muslims can adapt whatever time they feel comfortable, Chinese can adopt their Lunar Calendar, for me I prefer the status quo. I certainly support Muslim call to adopt what they wanted. But I hope that they will respect others' preference to use the GMT.

The world is too set in their ways to change standard times now, it's as simple as that.

Frankly this is the first time I heard of this, but I am no geologist, is there any evidence or scientific journal pointing to that? If possible please enlighten me.

    Thanks

Yes it is right that Mecca is, scientifically, the center of the earth. But it would be hard to change timezones.

I cant find any scientific journal to ascertain that, can you provide us some references? Appreciate it.

the conference title was "Mecca, the Centre of the Earth, Theory and Practice." I am not scientist, but I believe people, specially Muslims should be careful before taking such theories as fact, I m not a scientist, so I can't say if that is true or not without hearing different opinion and studies by different scientist, I tried to look online for more information, the only thing I found was:

    http://www.55a.net/firas/english/?page=show_det&id=285&select_page=69

whether it was a fact or not, I do not know what it has to do with timing, people use whatever time they feel best for them, I m in Jordan and use Jordan time neither GMT nor Mecca. Even if they meant to be the reference point for the world time, I personally would still go with the most used one.

Imad, I am glad we share the same sentiment. The conference title may be taken too literally.

Changing GMT time is pointless... Greenwitch line is Greenwitch line.. We don't need a new one, its practically useless IMO...

Today, in other threads you have accused me of ducking questions.

Do you care to answer the direct question about your statement? Or will you continue to ignore it?

To be fair to browntwn, I had done a lot of googling on that I haven't found any evidence other than what you have quoted. Can it be just a literary statement rather than a scientific theory?

To establish the center of the earth or to say that Mecca is in perfect alignment and so forth is something I myself don't understand from my limited knowledge of physics. There isn't something known as true North magnetic field for your information.

You may want to correct me on this, as I had said yes I do know some physics but I am not a phd in that field.

Sorry wisdomtool , I cant provide you with sources.
I found some resource it is talking about magnetic fields, maybe It can be understanded as magnetic fields.
But adopting Mecca time is not good idea today. There are international standarts. With it or without it (adopting Mecca time ) Mecca(Kabaa) is the center of earth and center of universe for every muslim in the world.

And why Greenwitch is chosen ? What place was before Greenwitch ?
