Ok I started a new site yesterday, I'll just say for now it is a horror (zombies in particular) theme. I currently have music on my home page ' Metallica's One'

Some people say they do not like music when they enter a site... Id just like some feed back or your opinins on this

    Thank you

I dislike music on a website that auto starts when you land on the page.

no matter what the site is all about but if some music starts playing as soon as I land on the homepage the next thing I do is to hit the close tab button.... I find music on homepage so irritating..

I have installed the media start stop button at the top, it will still auto start but you can easily stop it. Opinions on that? I dunno I just like it, but alot of people seem not to.

Unless you are a Nightclub, DJ, or Record Company, I would nix the music. You can't predict people's taste and even though I may be interested in checking out your site, I hate Metallica and my first reaction would be to close out the site and call the webmaster a "goofball".

The thing about music on a site, unless it's directly related to the sites content, ie: an artist website playing their own music, or a club that plays a particular genre, you are assuming that others will enjoy it..and most of the time just the assumption is enough to piss people off...sort of like driving in a residential area with your stereo loud enough to vibrate people's houses....even if I normally like the music, the fact that you are forcing it on me at a time when I may not feel like hearing it, is still a big turn off and makes me want to throw a brick at your car.

Also, you are taking the risk that users won't have a negative opinion of the music that you have chosen, which will be a negative opinion of your site..IOW a very bad first impression.

No matter how you rationalize it, people don't like music (especially metal, and rap) forced on them.
    I would nix the music.

Awful, I get so annoyed when there is music on a page, especially a homepage.

Music or sound on a homepage should NEVER be done. Putting it in because you like it tells me you don't care at all about your visitors. They will never come back. What if someone accessed it from work and "One" started cranking from their cubicle? They'd never return. Your site should be safe for work unless it's adult. I find that most of my traffic comes from people bored at work.

If you absolutely have to have it, don't make it auto-start. Let the user decide if they want to turn it on, not off.

I absolutely hate it when music comes blaring up on a homepage. I don't want other people in the office to know when I am browsing around for non-work stuff. And a lot of the music is bad with no controls to figure out how to shut it off.

I agree, i would not use music on a regular homapage. If it would be a flash user experience its ok.

Dont autostart music on the site, have a player available if you realy want to provide it, alot of ppl also surf the net while listening to music, so if your site starts blaring music aswell it gets immediately closed.

I think the general consensus is overwhelmingly to NOT have music autostart on a homepage. And while most people can give only their opinion on the matter, I have tested autostart music, video (flash), and live spokesperson. For each site the conversion rate was 15% - 400% higher when the autostart feature was replaced with a "click to play" type feature.
