Multiple smaller sites: How to promote?

Hope this is the right forum for asking..

I'm starting to come to the conclusion that 'spread betting' is a much better method of making money off the web: rather than focussing on one site, create many smaller sites which although bring in a smaller income, due to the sheer amount of them will bring in more money over time. 100 sites making $5 a day seems easier than one site making $500 a day. There's also the 'security' of knowing that if one site should suddenly drop off the radar its not the end of the world compared to your main income source going down the drain..

My question is, how do you promote so many sites? For bigger ones i would buy some high PR links, wait till the next PR update and then be in the position for link exchanges etc. The problem with this for smaller sites is that 100 PR7 links are going to take a lot longer to make your money back on. So, is there a systematic method/process you guys use after creating one of these smaller content sites which starts the ball rolling? Do you have some high PR sites you use to feed your smaller sites? Just submit to all directories and hope that people start to link to your articles? Any tips appreciated!

A few high power links for getting sites indexed, submit to all directories, inter link between groups of sites (hosted on different servers). Use the DP Coop and Link-Vault to drive some extra links.
Another possibility is to use sitewide links (the ones where people allow multiple urls/anchors) - PM me for info.
Advertise for link exchanges regardless of the PR of your site - some people will still link to brand new sites, especially if the site is relevant.

Try a hub an spoke linking scheme, where you have one "main" site that links out to the small ones, and they all link back to the hub.
