......... yikes ...i need to learn more about this 'webmaster' stuff :p

is it possible to run more than one domain from a given piece of webspace?

eg: i have 20 gig of space...can i run multiple sites from it..or does each domain need its own hosting package?

i am looking at a package that offers 10 free domain names as part of the deal....and i don't see what the point of that is
(apart from owning some names you may like)
that piece of webspace only has ONE ip address allocated to it already,
so all the sites would 'clash' ??

or am i totally getting confused.
    TIA :) G-E-M

You can run as many domains from one account as the provider allows.

I have two accounts. One is limited to one domain and the other is unlimited.

If they will buy you 10 domains, then you can host at least 10 different sites on that account.

They may allow you to host more, but you may have to buy the domain.

All you got to do is park your additional domains on top of your main domain.

Then use your script to switch databases, and configurations.

Yeah, I have a package from www.realwebhost.net and I run all of my sites from the same space, and just use WHM to manage the sites as a whole, and cPanel to manage them independantly.

They're called domain pointers. They basically set it up so all the domains point to the same IP address, then (I imagine) the apache configuration decides which directory to use as the HTTP base depending on which URI is requested.

www.site5.com are currently offering 5 pointers per package, which is probably the most you want to host on the same server without "putting all your eggs in one basket", hehe. I have 3 sites on 1 package and 2 on another, it works well. Basically in if you point domaina and domainb at the account, you then configure it in your cpanel (or netadmin in site5's case) to point to a subdirectory in your public_html.

    So you'll have domaina -> public_html, and domainb -> public_html/domainb

Only thing to watch out for is mod_rewrite, you can break the pointer if you're not careful.

    Domains are like chocolate.....

    I own somewhere between 100 and 200.

If they're giving them away free, may as well have them.

You may want to look into
    • Addon Domain names
    • subdomains
    • domain name redirection (your domain registerer can provide)

You should really contact your provider. They should be able to help you. All depends on the hosting package you got, but almost all hosting providers offer you things like '10 domains shared server' or something like that.

get in touch with them, get it set up, then come back here for advice on how to use it :)

thanks...i have subdomians set up, and i also have several domains pointing at the same index.htm...so if you type in .com or .co.uk you end up at the same place...

but can i host completely different sites with totally different content on one hosting package? eg: recipes.com and carsales.com
......if they are on the same package...wouldn't they have the same ip address? or is the ip address pointing at the name rather than the hosting space?

I can't speak how hosting packages are sold, but technically, this is how it works:

    * you can have domain.com and domain.net pointing to the same IP address

    * when you type http: //domain.com/index.html, your browser parses the URL and extracts three pieces: 1) http tells it to connect to the port 80; 2) it looks up domain.com and finds the IP address; 3) it connects to the obtained IP address and sends this request:

    GET /index.html HTTP/1.1
    Host: domain.com

    * the web server that hosts both, domain.com and domain.net on the same address examines the Host header and serves index.html from the virtual website that is associated with domain.com.
