Do you guys think that having multiple sites on one hosting account (same ip address) is not good idea from the seo point of view?

Some people have told me that only one site will get good PageRank if I do that! Is this true?

Please post you view on this.

It does not matter. Most hosting accounts are shared hosting and already have several accounts on the same IP. You having several make no difference. Search engines look at the different domains or subdomains not the IP.

I don't think its bad. I do that and it save a lot of money for sure.
The disadvantage is, SE will not count backlinks from the same IP address. So if you exchange backlinks around your site in the same IP, it will be useless. Unless you give each one of them their own IP address with different C block IP.

The only issue might be having links to the sites being all on the same ip. (site 1 having a link to site 2, site 2 having link to site 6 or whatever). I've heard of this hurting seo. Anyone else?

Thanks for all the replies, guess I won't need to fork out another 90 or so dollars on hosting. :)

It depends on what hosting company you use. If they are overselling and offering ridiculously low prices then it can be bad. Your website will be slow. I would look for a web host that owns their own servers and doesn't oversell space and bandwith that you don't need and your websites will be a lot faster.

We are currently hosting sites on two separate servers on Rackspace and have no problems with the search engines over this.

The danger is when/if the server goes down, you are totally down, so my advice is get a top notch server with an excellent performance record.

No, it is not bad, unless you inter-link all websites. If you link all your sites with each other, then the backlinks could be devalued, however, that shouldn't add a penalty, just decrease backlink value for these specific links.

Don't worry about it. Having more than one site on a server has nothing to do with pagerank.

Your question is kind of vague so I think you are getting a variety of replies but essentially they are all correct. When I say vague I mean because you did not say if you were inter-linking them which I assume to be the case. In that event, yes, it is bad, you could theoretically get banned from Google if you do it too agressively back and forth.

What I mean by that is that you could link from site A to site B and you wont get any "link love" as far as PR is concerned but you wont get banned. If you however link agressively back and forth between the sites you could be in some trouble being on the same i.p.

If however you are NOT linking then it is no problem and it will not affect your rankings on the seperate sites and each site should rank fine as long as you are not relying on your own interlinking between the sites on the same i.p.

I hope that answers your question.
