Sorry for this very basic question. I was researching around and am a little unclear. The only type of hosting I have had experience with is shared hosting where I register the domain and the hosting all as part of a package. I have a few different ideas I'd like to begin developing a few at a time. I'm wondering what is most likely the best hosting scenario for me. It would be a handful of small sites. One of my ideas could use a good deal of bw if it starts to take off, but I'll worry about that once it does take off. The other ideas are not bw or server intensive. A few require webstores and i would like ssl. so my question is, what is the most efficient way to begin this undertaking hosting/domain-wise. I was thinking about dreamhost hosting account with some extra ip's to point domains at? I'm a little confused about how the domain/ip pointing to the hosting works. I was hoping to start a few sites on the same dreamhost account and as the requirements increase, move each site as necessary. does this sound like the right idea? or am I making it harder on myself than it should be? I don't think I have the need at this point for a dedicated server (i'm sure of it) but maybe VPS would suit me? I have a feeling that vps might be overkill at the beginning... Thanks for any help.
if you have the budget get a vps, if not try reseller hosting (multi accounts on one hosting package) if you go the vps route i recommend servint.net for a managed vps.
well, if you are going to have multiple domains and IP's, you can have that in Servage.net, you will buy a dedicated IP, then add a virtual host for the domains... go to their site for more info
thanks for the info... I like the servage featurers, it's almost exactly what I'm looking for except the bw is somewhat limited for one of my plans, I like the one click install scripts too. damn... I would sign up right now if it wasn't for that bw...and from a quick search it seems like they're on top of the bw for shutting you down past 120gb a day....It's not possible to host multiple sites on a dreamhost account?
ahhh I did a little looking around and I can do multiple domains with dreamhost althought it is not technically "addon domains" in the traditional sense (I didn't know the term addon domain before your post, lol) interesting post I found googling around that answers my questions... I wish dreamhost had some more oneclick installs...but ah well http://forum.dreamhosters.com/curious/92319-Add-on-and-Sub-Domains.htm
lol, addon domains is a command in CPanelX.. Example from the main domain, main.com When you clicked 'addon domain'.. It will ask you for the domain name, [NOTE: the nameservers must be set before doing this], username and password.. then, there will be a directory created for that domain, suppose you have added second.com, then the directory, second.com/ will be created under public_html(or whatever www folder)... So, the second.com is accessible in 2 ways... the domain name itself, second.com, and in, http://www.main.com/second.com/ Hope youunderstood..
yeah i only have one site currently on a shared host i've used before and they don't use cpanel and don't offer "addon domains" lol ...so teh sux...anyways, I'll be moving on soon. Thanks for the help
Hostgator allow unlimited addon domains plus you can join for just a penny here: http://www.hostingdiary.com/2007/09/web-hosting-cou.html The other option is a reseller account or a vps account. Andrew
There are a lot, in fact most shared accounts that will let you do addon domains. To the world in general there is no way that anyone knows whether an account is an addon domain or a primary hosted domain. I am not a fan of DH, but they are one of the better keepers of the oversold than a lot of the other sellers out there so if you like them that would be an okay place to stay. You will have to have a real popular site before you get near a suspension. One thing I would suggest is that you get in the practice of buying your domains one place and your hosting another. By doing it that way you will never get into a situation where your domains are held hostage if you hosting goes sour.
^thanks. I think dream host will be infinitely better than my current host. I used dnscoop to check my current site...505 sites on the same IP...outrageous... and that's a good tip on the domain registration too, because I'm pretty sure my current domain would also be a b*tch to transfer as well. Where is a good reliable registrar thats good to just manage all of my domains and is not a hassle to point around different places or transfer if necessary? also that provides private whois. greens comin'... i've gotten some good help in this thread
Check the private fees cause they do vary. Price wise for the domain itself take a look at godaddy, namecheap, domainsite, and name all are .com.
Regarding the domain registering I have the rule to not only use 1 domain registrar, you never knows what happens, but I use following sites myself because they allow one to change the dns, make ones personal information private/hidden: sorry for the (dot's) 1. www (dot) 77gb (dot) net (my first choice, fast and reliable) 2. 1and1 (dot) com (its cheap and reliable, but its veeeeery slow, almost to the point that you will throw your computer out of the window) I also use following, but its not my first choice because you have to pay extra for additional things like private personal information and so on: 3. GoDaddy (dot) com But as Isaid before do not use one to all your domains, seperate them into what you "never" will sell, what you "maybe" will sell, and what you "will" sell. I put all my "will" to GoDaddy, because its easy and free to push the domains to other GoDaddy-users. I put all my "maybe" to 1and1, because its cheapest, and I dont know if I will develope them or sell them. I put all my "never" to 77gb, because it has the additional extras Im looking for for free, and other extras for low fees. I usually do the transfer from one to another registrar, when its time to renew the domains I hope this helps you. Best regards...
