Multiple multiple multiple 301 redirects have any effect on SERP?

Is it possible for lots and lots of 301 redirects to have an effect on the destination domains' SERP?

I've kept my eye on a site that does okay in the rankings and was doing a backlink check on it and noticed they have over 100 other domains 301ing to their "root" domain. Most of the domains are mispellings or word re-arrangements (e.g. "bluewigdets.com", "blue-widgets.com", "blue-widget.com" etc.). Is this entirely a traffic maneuver, or is there more reward to buying a couple hundred domains (some of them quite old) and 301 redirecting them to your "home" domain?
