multiple keywords in anchor text

Is it best to use your search term in the anchor text of links, or stuff a few keywords in? Do search engines use your link as a search phrase, or do multiple keywords help?

Yes anchor text is very important. You want to use your main keywords in there. Say you have a dog site and you are optimizing for "dog".

The anchor text just "dog" will help out more for the search for that keyword.

If you use "domain name - dog" or something similiar it will help less for the term dog.

So I would put the exact phrase you are optimizing for as the anchor text. You can stuff some more in there but will be less effective.

If I'm optimizing for blue widgets and red widgets could effective anchor text be blue and red widgets i.e. is it worth trying to include multiple phrases into a single anchor text link?

You can put them both with no problem. Just saying putting 1 alone would be more effective if you were shooting for that keyword.

I don't think keyword stuffing is a good idea. You're best off when you can slip in your keyword while still having the link make sense to a human reader.
