Multiple .htaccess Redirect - is there a performance hit?

I am looking at adding a number of .htaccess Redirects (301's) on a site due to the client changing CMS, backlink generation and a whole world of mess. There's likely to be 50-100 specific URLs that wil need 301 redirects. Rewriting is not an option at this time as anything we try and do conflicts with the Rewriting for the new CMS (sigh).

Is there a performance issue in having many 301 Redirects in a .htaccess file?

Performance issues for the user or the server?

Server wise, I highly doubt it. Client wise, possibly. Users with slow connections may take longer to follow each redirect to get to the destination.
