Multiple Front Page Results for Sub-Domains from 1 Domain

Is it possible, practical, or in any way hurtful to your sites if you use sub-domains all based on getting the same keyword on the front page? I have a great keyword in my domain, and I want to dominate the first page of Google. Will I be hurting my sites in general if I have several sub-domains all trying to get front page? (I'm assuming not).

Is there something in Google's crazy algorithm that would cause you to recommend not doing this?

The only time I've seen multiple sub-domains in the front page of a result is when searching Google. Of course, who knows if this is just an exception or not.

    Looking for advice.

I would only have one domain, sub or otherwise, trying to go for the same keywords.

Otherwise you may be hit by a penalty in the longrun.

There's a penalty for it? That's dumb if you ask me but that could explain why I don't think I've even ever seen 2 .wordpress.com's in one search result page.
