multiple domains

i've been reading a lot about the emergence of "typed-in" traffic, and what it's doing to the domain marketplace. i had an idea about our own products that i wanted to implement, but i want to make sure i'm not going to hurt us in the long run. we're in an industry with a huge selection of products with different part numbers. what if i started gobbling up the TLD's for those part numbers and used 301's to redirect to our homepage/specific page? would that be some sort of spam technique? i've heard of our competition doing the same thing, but i'm not sure if it's working for them.

If your part numbers are something that is searched heavily, then by all means gather up the TLDs. If its only an infrequent search, then I don't advise wasting the money.

that's exactly what i was thinking about. some of them are searched frequently, and others are most likely long tail which wouldn't give me much.
