Multiple Domains - Sites

I've got two issues I was wondering about in regards to how it would affect search engine rankings:

    1) I own about 10 quality domain names related to my topic. Would it benefit me to create 10 unique websites with different webhosts, develop them all, promote links for each of them individually, then link them all to my main site? I read on Webmonkey that this is of little benefit, but it would seem to me that Google has no way to know those 10 webpages linking to your site were actually created by you. I do not understand the downside to this method.

    2) How important is good code to pagerank? Say I have crappy code but good keyword distribution, would I get penalized simply because the code is not up to par with standards? I know my code is crappy because the site looks beautiful in Explorer but in Firefox it looks like it got vomited out of a cow's stomach.

    1. if i had the time I would do it for a website that had potential to earn well
    2. so long as links are crawlable, messy code doesn't impact pagerank scores

Sorry for jumping on 'tracker' posting, but I have similar concern.

Thanks to 'Dominic' and 'Michael' for your reply but none of you mentioned why would you develop one site or all 10 sites and what are the advantages of having one site or 10 sites?
