Multiple Dedicated Servers?

    Hi,
Does anybody know if large hosting companies such as HostGator and GoDaddy allow you to have multiple dedicated servers for one site (for load balancing purposes)?

    Thanks in advance,

How many servers? Which OS? database? Preferred location? Managed or unmanaged?
Usually, the answer for your request is a private rack, where all servers are connected together within a VLAN, utilizing gigabit switch.

Yes, this would be fine. Almost any reputable host will have load balancing software if your renting more than one server. Hope this helps.

Is there a reason why alot of big websites have their own private servers as oppose to renting cluster servers from the major hosts?

Do you recommend purchasing private cluster servers when you have sufficient funds for the better long term plan for reducing expenses?

    Thanks in advance,

When you have many server enough, and you want to control over your hardware, it would be great to colo them. If you are still utilizing small server, leasing will save you money.

www.softlayer.com is the only DC in the US as far as im aware that has an internally routed network.

one of the sites I maintain that hosts on their network (alexa < 1000 globally).. Had the internal routing statically modified in order to provide transparent load balancing support for mysql, apache, and bind using zeus zxtm.. If you need high quality service, they're the only ones I'd recommend.

It's not correct. I know some others using both external and internal networks for customers. We ourselves utilize gigabits private network too. All our servers are connecting to 2 separate switches: one for public connections from the Internet, one for private connections between servers. It is not a new thing in hosting industry nowadays :) It depends on how you design your network however.

Are these *fully routed* internal networks, or just 2 switches on the same rack? Softlayer's internal network is unlike anything I've found at any other dedicated server DC.. (I think I recall something about Liquid Web getting ready to set one up, or was in process of).

would you mind sending me the names and URLs of these DCs you speak of?

LayeredTech just offers load-balancing solution. Webnx with guys at rack911 utilizes clustered systems at webnx facility, from what I have heard. Cartika manages a large clustered H-Sphere system in Colo4Dallas facility with 20+ racks full of servers. They are not only some switches in the same rack I believe. Can you let me know how you define *fully routed network*?

My definition of fully routed network is that it's using commercial grade routers, switching, and logic for automatic fail over (incase of a bad cable or dead port) of any INTERNAL 'backbone' cables (to/from racks) in the datacenter; And that it automatically establishes routes between servers to create a VLAN for servers with ips on different 10.a/b/cs when new servers are added to your account.. (and routes automatically propagated)

    for instance,
One server at SL's internal IP is 10.5.162.xxx another is 10.11.109.xxx, and another 10.12.104.xxx.. Only the other servers in my VLAN can communicate with those ips, and have no problems communicating between each other. These 3 servers may be on complete opposite sides of the building from each other.

And lets not forget about automatic internal IP delegation.. (and all server setup times are <2hrs if all the hardware is there)
