Multilingual sites and implications.

    Hi,

What are the implications of a site that has content in two languages. Is it generally a bad idea? I'm assuming an SE might categorize a site, or at least part of a site as English or Spanish. I'm attempting to target some of the Spanish-speaking market in America, and here are the options.

    1) Launch a-site-in-spanish.com and a-site-in-english.com
    2) Split the sites up into different directories and minimally cross-link the english and spanish pages.
    3) Split the sites up into directories, but liberally cross-link the two.

In other words, does Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. categorize language on a site level, or on a page level, or both? Are the indices totally seperate? Can it hurt me, etc?

What if you installed a multilingual plugin on your site? That way it keeps it as one site, but offers a solution for both speakers.

For instance, Translate This Blog Translator (wordpress.org/extend/plugins/translate-this-blog-translator/) is a small plugin that a viewer to your site can click on, and choose what language to view your site in. It saves time and money as it's complete free and keeps the SEO concise.
