Hey guys, What are you doing with domain names/hosting for multiple sites? I've been reading how some of you own > 10 sites and I was curious about the following: Are you: 1. Using subdomains (newsite.mainsite.com) on a main hosting package? 2. Purchasing domain names and individual hosting packages? 3. Something else? Any insights?
#3. Running my own Xserve server. Although probably not the way to go if you don't have a background in server administration. In which case look for a hosing company that offers reseller accounts and/or discounts for multiple sites (or are just cheap to being with).
I would recommend going for cpanel based reseller hosting. You can try companies like: TowerHost Hostgator e3Servers
I have all my sites (only three) running on one hosting account. The domains are registered at godaddy and I have them on the nameserver of my host. Works out pretty well.
Yes, there are lots of "reseller" hosting packages available. For pretty honest reviews of the best ones, I usually recommend whreviews.com As mentioned above, hostgator.com will give you unlimited domains for about $25/month
Thanks for the replies. Hostgator looks very interesting and you can get unlimited domains even with the 9.95/mo plan. I have been using powweb (got it like three years ago), but now that I'm jumping in with the ebiz stuff, it's definitely time to look at other solutions. (edit) Anyone here using hostgator? Any "testimonials"?
Yes, they offer that and I have been doing that for one of my client without any problem. A good way to save money for multiple sites hosting expenses
I've used HostGator for over a year now to host my sites. Pro's: -Awesome customer service. 24/7 live chat/phone support/email direct to their network engineers. -Reliable uptime. In the year I have been with them, I think my sites have been down for a total of about 4 minutes so far (yes I track downtime with software). -Support for customization. Their team will happily install new perl libraries, php modules, custom software, and just about anything else onto the server you use at no charge and usually within about 6 hours of the request being sent in. Awesome! Cons': -Stupid livechat/phone people. If you need anything beyond a simple server restart, they'll ask you to email their for the request. It's not really a bad thing, but it's kinda silly if their support system tells you to just go through another part of their support system. -No SSH on shared hosting sites. This really bugs me. I can't do SSH connections, which is how I use to work alot on my sites. Had to stop when I switched. If you don't use SSH this doesn't really affect you. Overall I would give them 9/10 and I recommend them to anybody searching for hosting companies I'm going to be leasing a dedicated server from them soon...that should be interesting
All my sites run on one hosting account(homestead) which I've been less than happy with as of late. I also have one blog I just built over at blogger.com
I'm using Dreamhost to host all my domains. They allow you to host unlimited domains for as low as 9.95/month, and you can even bring down the price with promo codes
