Do you think that MSN is going to cause any major problem to Yahoo!? Google is there, right on the top of the world, they got things covered pretty neatly and it would take anyone a lot of time to replace google from the #1 spot they have achieved. But do any of you experts think that MSN is a search engine that could create an upset the current setup and move to the second place under Yahoo?
I think Google has pretty much peaked. I have run Search Engine Marketing Courses for about 3 years now and in the intro I ask delegates what SEs they use. I have detected that more and more people are using a blend of search engines to find what they are looking for, rather than relying on Google 100%. Another trend is that since Google floated, professional IT people are saying that Google has become just another corporate monolith and is not considered '2 regular guys done good' anymore. If was ever that I'm not so sure! Either way, my sites do really well in Google, but FANTASTIC in MSN so more power to Microsoft!
MSN might be making webmasters happy.. but I think it cannot take the position of Yahoo. MSN still has a long way to go, in terms of the traffic and in terms of their algorithm. IMO, Google will stay at # 1 for atleat 4 or 5 years, and Yahoo at # 2.
I dont think MSN is going to cause any major problems to Yahoo. You never know they might also have a tie up bcoz of the MSN and yahoo messenger thing recently.
i think msn is definatley going to grow in terms of its market share of search because of Live spaces and microsoft live! imagine if MYSPACE had a search engine at the top of the site...it would be able to compete with the top search engines
Microsoft will have a huge step up in Search when Windows Vista is released. The search technology will be so tightly integrated withing the OS that users will find themselves pushed into using the Live.com service. Roll on another anti-trust case for Big Bad Billy Boy!
msn has made HUGE increases in search quality over the past year or so. IMO they have as good an index or better than google. With windows live search and microsoft branding the hell out of their "live" services I see trouble for yahoo and google. IMO yahoo is going to lose out in the end and drop in market share over the next year or two. Google is going to start losing ground as well. When the dust settles it will be interesting to see what happens. It might make room for a 4th big player (definitely not ask.com though lol)
exactly! I'm now using vista as my sole os on my desktop and my laptop. I find myself using live search more than google search just because the tools are there.
google is so embedded into people it's now the only search engine normal people use. Geeks don't make up much of the searches.
I don't think Yahoo is going to vanish. They have a lot of work to do to regain the search market, but eventually they will regain some of Google's marketshare. It's a matter of time. What Yahoo ought to do is create a simpler page, with JUST the Search bar like Google does.
I disagree. People use what is convenient. MSN is more conveniten when it is built into the browser and op system. Why do you think google is scrambling to push their desktop search and all of their other services.
ok? Good argument. Do some research on the algorithms msn has started using. They are really focusing on their search market.
As far as the whole "Yahoo should create a page with just the search bar on it"... Go to search.yahoo.com. They did that. People don't use Google because it's got a simple "just plain search" main page. If they added stuff to it, people would still use it. That's not what attracts users or even brings back users. If nothing else, that is just their "landing page" so to speak. The real reason users stick with Google is because they find what they are looking for at Google. Their search quality is good enough Yahoo's search is "good enough" for most people and that's why they still have like 30-40% marketshare. MSN hasn't had good enough search results for the last few years to really make any big strides in terms of market share. Give them a year or two with live.com and they'll be knocking on Google's door a bit more. The real battle is not for marketshare. The battle is for mind-share. Search is just one basic component to online software. THat's why Goolge, Yahoo, and MSN all work so hard on the extra services. The idea is that if you really love Yahoo mail, you'll end up using Yahoo Search and other services more. If Microsoft puts Office online and does it right, that could change everything and putting live search into office live....that could make all the difference.
I like the yahoo front page. I can check multiple things at once without having to click around. Very few people know about search.yahoo.com though
