I would more likely think Microsoft would want to stay on the up and up until a time where they might have the market share. Personally, I would love them to always be number 3. They drive the other top 2 to innovate more.

Did anybody else catch this? MSN allegedly favors IIS over Apache and the other web servers:

    http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/04/26/1228227

    Has anyone noticed similar?

[update: looks like thread was merged, didn't realize this was a topic already]

    I wouldn't be surprised if that's true.

Way to go MSN!! Does favoring IIS help supply the best results for seacrhers?

This can't be true...can it? That would be the most ridiculous bias imaginable.

But is it that hard to believe?

Did you guys even read the link roadies provided?

He doesn't suggest that you wont rank well if you don't use IIS.

I repeat what I already said, this is 100% nonsense... one person on that website you posted even wrote MSN is biased to IE and he gets bad results on Firefox. That's absolutely not true, you get exactly the same results no matter which browser you use!! Even with Lynx!! I am also #1 with some of my IIS hosted sites and some of my Linux hosted sites. Also maybe you thought about a bigger market share of IIS on up to date sites than before, even Sun ships with Windows 2003 now :)

I just checked my serps and I have to go all the way to the fifth spot to find an IIS server. Strange - there are a lot of people running outdated and I assume insecure versions of apache out there.

Whether this is true or not, I cannot believe how many people find it this hard to believe. When you consider that every search engine is doing it already (being bias through THEIR own set of algo instructions) why is it so hard to believe that a company who owns a search engine and who sells server products would not want to promote their products?

Don't be too naive here people...

All search engines have been caught doing 'funny' with their index, so if Microsoft is doing this, it should surprise no one.

it's easy when you figure that ms wants to own search ... they want to control the internet like google is doing now ... but they have a long way to go and they know they have to give people what they want first ... great results.

it's like a sleezy salesperson trying to rip off what's promised their customers before they even have the deal in their hands.

they have to have marketshare first ... they stand to make more money with their version of google's PPC, more than selling software ... and they already own that. this is a no brainer.

this is naive "MS is the antichrist ... but i still buy all their stuff" garbage ... i'm 5 times more worried about google.

if MS wins the search wars ... then we can begin to worry about that.

Very true skattbrain... I don't know why people always think MS is evil everywhere and anytime. If it would be that way I think they wouldn't have any customers anymore since Linux is such a good alternative with great customer support :p ...And I really think when you compare Google and MSN results there is a lot more to worry on Google, because for many terms where I get legitimate results on MSN I have pages over pages of ad garbage on Google especially when searching product reviews and similar things.

Linux is no where near as user friendly and click and go as Microsoft. The software, installation and support for Linux based products is just not there. It is getting better, but still not even close. I like Linux, but there is no way my parents or grandparents could figure out how to install software.

yep I've been very sarcastic ;) ...actually I have nothing against Linux, I used both as server solution and I just like IIS more for what I do.
