Hi, First proper post here, so please be gentle with me!! I am a learner, got roped into building a website for my parents new business. The website ranks top 10 for basically any search term you can think of in their niche on MSN.com, but hardly features at all in MSN.co.uk, or in Google, although the site has been indexed by both. The site has yet to be indexed by Yahoo. My questions - Why is MSN so much easier to get a ranking on than Google? do they use different algorithms, or is it just cos MSN's index is smaller than Googles? What do I need to do to rank in msn.co.uk? I'm currently using a free host, don't think it's in the UK - would moving the site to a UK host help, or a liberal scattering of the word "uk" in the site content? Please help, all this SEO stuff is squishing my brain right now!!
cos google is more advanced then msn, it has much more filters, and more bits to its algo. msn is new and will learn eventually. yes they use diff algo's. dunno in msn case, but its said that if you want to rank in searchengine .co.uk you get an advantage if hosted in the uk and have a .co.uk / .org.uk domain.
But on the other hand MSN does behave even more unpredictable than Google... I have been #1 there for many keaywords with one site and then suddenly all good rankings vanished... after a few days/weeks I was back in the top 10 at once.
the best idea is to get a .com site hosted in the UK this way its relitavley easy to rank in both but if you host a .co.uk in america its not that easy to get in to the .com listings DO NOT use free hosting for any serious project especially sub-domains (unless you know what your looking for). And seo is not difficult, it just takes time and it's fun so dont let squish your brain too much
do you have inbound links from a co.uk urls? try getting some if you don't feel like moving to a co.uk domain. ofcourse algorithms are different other wise you would have gotten same results - and I believe the fast of MSN is not because they have smaller amount of sites in their database, as they are here before google engineers finished their high-school, they just got a better system of crawlers.
Thanks for the replies folks, MSN positions have remained as they were, rankings on Google have just started coming in at 130-150 for my Keywords, suppose I'll just have to keep submitting to directories for backlinks etc, and wait for them to rise. It's a b&b site so have plenty of time now during off-season for SERP to rise before people really start looking again. Google PR just gone from 0 to 3 so in with a chance!
and also Be Carefull, Google penalizes you for stuff that msn doesnt.. and also MSN ranks the Titles higher then Google..so its easy to get ranked in MSN then Google
msn indexes my site more better than google does .. i am trying to get it more google friendly, cuz thats where most users are gonna search .. and a better ranking with them seems more important.
Right now MSN is peanuts, it does not give u much returns. Not atleast in my case. They need huge improvement in thier SERP's
msn is easy (1 week to rank high) yahoo is medium google is hard even if you rank well in msn, it doesn't produce near the amont of traffic as google
Take a look here http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=funny+pics&first=1&FORM=PDRE See something odd?
There is something that I don't understand - because it doesn't make any sense. If it's easier to get a very good rank in google, this means that all the compotitors has the same good chance to be ranked well. And this means that you don't have much difference between Google and MSN. I agree that it's easier to get listed in a good place in MSN comparing to google, but I don't think this is the reason. What do you think?
It appears that MSN doesn't have an aging filter so right there your going to be able to rank in MSN faster and easier than in Google.
