This seems to be how microsoft are replying to Google referral ads - as they are citing it as cost per action frm an advertisers point of view.

Instead of offering this to webmasters like Google has done, MSN are offering it to shoppers in the hope to lure them into using the Live brand.

The success of this initiative will depend on viral marketing by the people using Live search for shopping. As word spreads that simply by using Live search for shopping requirements, more people will gravitate towards Live for their shopping needs aiming to make extra savings.

Some shops already offer cashback incentives but not quite the same through paying directly via paypal. Currently, Google referrals and other CPA advertisers offer the 'cashback' to webmasters who promote the goods and services and as such it doesn't represent any saving to the consumer. This way, the consumer benefits directly by saving money - but it doesn't cost Live or the Vendor anything extra as they would have been paying that money out to webmasters anyway. In essence, it can potentially make money for Live and for the Vendors as the shopper is unlikely to receive the same amount of money a webmaster would have received for promoting the product or service.

Naturally, as webmasters are not the vehicle for the viral marketing campaign, it will be hard to have any long-term impact on search market share but will likely increase it in the short-term. There is potential to build awareness for it to be successful in the long-term, but I don't know whether or not Microsoft will do it in the right way.

To be clear about what MSN is doing...

They are effectively turning their search engine into a incentive product search. Meaning if you gogo Google and you search for 'Soap' you will get lots of intresting information on soap and maybe even a retailer - but if you got MSN and search for 'Soap' you are going to get a bunch of links to places selling soap - all locked up with MSN's affiliate program and MSN will kick you some cash back.

It basically means MSN is giving up on search and whoring out their search engine. It also means competition for affiliates and incentive sites.

    Ste1975,

Msn/Live are not rewarding people for performing searches... they only reward people who buy things after performing a search by crediting their account with a variable cashback amount.

The % of cashback is likely to be lower than merchants would offer to affiliates and therefore they are increasing their profit margins on products. They are hoping that satisfied customers will refer their friends who will also buy the products in this way - the customer saves money, Live makes money and the merchants increase profit margins. A win, win, win situation.

Overall, the people who are likely to lose out are affiliate marketers who promote products available through the Live shopping site as these programmes are likely to be pulled from CPA and affiliate sites in favour of increasing profit margins *IF* it is well received by shoppers.

What this actually means is that users will get paid for placing search boxes on their site .
This is useful for webmasters who are looking for adsense alternatives .
