Microsoft plans to release Office Web, the cloud-based component of Office 2010. For personal users, Microsoft's Web apps will cost the same as Google Docs: nothing. All we'll need is a Window Live ID, and we'll be able to use Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, and Word online for free. Which will be hittttttt............!
Why is it a good thing? MS Office Pro currently costs the best part of £400 (GBP) They will be releasing it for free in a web based format Enough said?
Is it a pure cloud computing service like Google Docs or is it just a Software + Services solution? I still can't believe Microsoft will offer something free when in the same time, there is paid version for it. - Dynashox -
I think that Microsoft will win this thing. It can't compete with Google in search, but it surely can with this.
Yes, enough said. I somehow thought the LIVE ID would need a payment to get it up to that level though.
Microsoft is smart, but it's starting to act out rather weird lately, With RC candidate releases for general public to try out Windows 7 and now this.. I think Microsoft is slowly trying to trail in Google's wake.. *grins*
Cloud based office? that sounds like another headache waiting to happen.. I mean come on... we already have cloud based operating systems don't we?
yes there is cold war between these two billionares. they both are trying to improve their system. and now the widows has a new challenge with google as google is launching its new operating system. lets see what will happen
Let the two giants fight it out as it surely would result in rolling of more such goodies for the general people! Regards, RightMan
WHy a business would sign up and use this is still something I do not get. Whether it is Google or Microsoft hosting the applications, you will still have an office full of non-workers should you lose internet connectivity or if there is an issue with the cloud you are connecting to. It has already happened a few times with Google even with their impressive infrastructure. Having worked with a startup company, I can see the attraction in terms of cost savings etc. I can also see the dread when trying to get an important document to a client or a prospective client and not being able to access the document.
You have it backwards. Microsoft is the only company that does NOT have a cloud based office and cloud based operating systems are not available yet. Actually, that's not true. Any version of *nix has been able to act like a cloud based operating system for decades. I can run any software program on any of my machines from anywhere in the world. For example, I do not have OpenOffice on this box but I could run it from another machine, securely, on my desktop. Note: I say run OO on my desktop. I am NOT saying I can view the desktop of the other machine. I run it just like it was installed on this box. Plus, I can have multiple instances of the same thing running at the same time, all securely.
why is it free ? they can do as usual payment based... they are afraid of google very much, just they are following google. but, i dont think they can win over google.
I hope that Microsoft will provide a business edition like they have for Outlook (Web Outlook). This will allow companies to really become more adjusted to the internet. Work literally anywhere.
So, in the coming few years Cloud based operating systems from Microsoft are goona be flooding the market ;x
Great! Finally we'll be able to have a more affordable OS as Microsoft will probably need to cut is sales cost to compete for consumer loyalty, we win! lol... news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology As far as the Doc's war is concerned I'm happy with google as it's an easy convenient extension from my account. It's also free storage space so if my hard drive crashes I've got most of my important data saved. ROOFIS
