The commission rate is 10%, and has been since Amazon first introduced mp3 sales. However, I wouldn't assume that it will always remain at that level. Amazon recently dropped eBooks from 10% to zero. Should they decide that they don't need the help of affiliates to increase their mp3s sales, they might do the same, or perhaps reduce the commission to 5% (same as iTunes). That is just a comment, but it is something to keep in mind.

Always make a point of reading the Operating Agreement; if you are smart, you will check it periodically. The elimination of commissions on eBooks was not communicated by e-mail, and many people were shocked when it kicked in; sales recorded at 10% suddenly changed to 0%, per the unnoticed change in the Operating Agreement.

That said, if you have a music site, mp3s can be an attractive offering. But you would need very high traffic to make anything significant from them. If you have 1000 visitors a day - not huge - and those visitors purchased a total of 100 mp3s, you would make $10 (or $300/month). That is assuming that on average one out of 10 people buys a song. That is achieveable, but not necessily easy.

I have a small number of mp3 links on my web site; a site devoted to one musician. Unfortunately, his most popular original albums are not offered as mp3s (nor are they offered on iTunes; I am assuming this is a contractual issue). There is an mp3 album of 5 of his most popular songs, so I can offer those, or the set of all five. I don't have 1000 visitors a day, and most of my visitors prefer CDs (the over 50 set), but offering the mp3s gives my visitors another choice.

Parenthetically, I used the mp3 widget for awhile for 3 albums and never sold anything as a result of those widgets. I did sell a handful of those mp3 albums, but not through the Amazon widget. I don't consider this a definitive test of the efficacy of the widgets, but I have removed them - more because they occasionally don't work than because I am certain that they aren't effective. I have a note icon which links to the handful of songs I offer, and a "Buy MP3 album" album link instead.

Another option for music sites is "free" downloads where you sign up for a marketing program or something. Rocket Profit has some that pay $1.25 or $1.50.
