This is a question for the skilled SEOs that have had experience in this area. I've worked on hundreds of clients websites and I have my own ideas on this topic, but I want to see what you think. When getting into the too 3 spots in Google, what do you feel is the most important factor to get to #1 or stay at that spot? A few keywords I've worked on for years were in the 1 spot for about a year and a half and dropped to 2-3 in the last couple months. Moving around in these spots in total normal, but being number 1 is always the goal. These keywords usually have 25,000,000 - 75,000,000 competitors in the results. So, what do you think matters most?
the truth is, try to not change the mantality when you get high up there, you change your mentality your gonna lose your rank. keep doing what you have been doing until now to go higher or keep your rank. when you start to change things, things just go wrong. keep doing the same exact seo you did to get that high dont change a think. target same keywords and keep the link building... KEEP IT UP!
Your site needs continuous quality backlinks and new contents to make much more important than the others.
Yeah if you are building low comp sites you are often fine to build a load of links and then when they get there they will stick but to stick up there with the big boys you have to keep on building.
Perhaps it is worthless to say since I presume you have already done, but I will however care to mention, do you check on your competitors backlink profiles? Have you notice any pattern changes? Are they chasing the same links that your clients site have, do they get new type of links? Can you get your hands on those new links? Now the scenario is the next, if your competitors are chasing after the same links your clients site has, then that should tell you enough that: you are supposed to create some links that competitors won't be able to get (i believe you understand what I mean). If its the other way around, then going after the same links your competitors have would be the way to go (along side with more links from different, trusted and quality resources).
