when is the right time to move to vps plan??? At present my site works ok with shared hosting plans with hostgator. My site currently receives about 3k visitors monthly.

    * How do i know this is the time to go/switch to VPS plan???
    * What is the barrier limit indicators like uniques or pageviews to watchout for?

Are you running a dynamic website? ie: MySQL & PHP

If you are you would probably want to move to a VPS sooner than if it were a static site.

3k/mo is nothing really. Save your money and stay on a shared plan.

stay on a shared host and save some bucks.... VPS is a good choice when you need some custom server configuration that your shared hosting provider won't configure for you as it will affect all shared hosting customers on the same port. Generally, VPS is a good choise for higher load sites...... but 3k ain't nothing ;)

so are you suggesting that receiving 10k uniques means is the right time to switch to vps? what is the exact number of uniques/pageviews i should look for?

I switched to a VPS when my site started having problems. If your present hosting is working, don't mess with it.

If your site is a PHP MySQL site, I would look at a VPS when you start to surge past 10k pv a day.

Who can recommend a VPS at a descent price? How long have you been using them and what kind of issues have you had?

Thanks for any input - I am in dire need and don't want to get a crappy host again....

I ran through the same thing and my advice to you is to wait until your shared hosting account get suspended for high load or something then ask them to grant you cPanel access to move then move to a VPS.

You can't determine the right moment because if you are on a shared server that has light load, they will allow you to use good share of it until it'a loaded with more customers

I'm not sure if i can do any recommendations here but feel free to contact me if you need a honest advice about a VPS :)
