How to Reduce the Pain of Switching Domains
    By Ross Dunn (c) 2007

Transferring traffic and popularity to a new domain is a
painstaking process that no one on the web appears to be immune
to, or so Topix.net has realized. Topix.net is a leading news
aggregation resource that has been in the news lately because
they are planning to move their site from Topix.net to Topix.com
after purchasing the .com for a cool million from a Canadian
    animation company.

I'm not talking about domains ... I'm talking about hosts ...

    Hello,

Basically purchase a new webhosting package while the website is still up and running. Stop any incoming content for the website for a few hours/minutes (depending on how fast you move). Create a copy of everything you have (content / databases) and put that copy on the new server that is not yet active for your domain.

After that simply change the NS (name servers) of your domain to point to the new location. When the NS change has been reflected you can easy resume the "incoming content" for the website.

As for SEO, as long as you have no downtime or at least try to minimize the downtime of your website, search engines will have no problem with the fact that you have changed your webhosting company.

Why? Because the ranking of your website is based on the content and the links coming in to your website and have absolutely nothing to do with the server that hosts your website.

Google said at some point that the user likes fast loading websites (thus implying that the speed of the website is a ranking factor, a small one but it's there, so if you see a down-rank in SEs it might be from the fact that your new server might be slower).

A down-rank is SEs might also be caused by the moving process itself (i.e. not all the pages are working as they should resulting in some 404 errors).

But as long as you try to make sure the site is working just fine before you change the NS and keep the old site up until you change the NS, there should be really no problem at all, as far as SEs are concerned.

changing host should not impact your serp ranking in any way. not unless you have a domain with specific country extention and you are hosting within that country. for example, if you have a co.uk site and you move your hosting form US to UK and do link building within UK, then yes you will have better SEO benefit as you are doing geo targeted seo. but for regular domains and site, there is no advantage or disadvantage moving host

It might effect it for a day or two but it will be fine over the long run.

I think it's actually possible to improve SEO, if you're moving from a shared IP with a bunch of spammy sites to your own dedicated.

As long as the URLs don't change it shouldn't matter. However, remember to keep the old site up for a few days on the old host (old IP address). If you don't you'll experience a dip in traffic since there will be routers on the internet that have your old IP cached and aren't scheduled to read your DNS yet. Usually you only need to leave the old site up for about 72 hours.
