I apologise if this has been answered before, but given that SE algorithms change over time, I guess it's always relevant. I have a site under one domain name (www.hypnosisaudiocds.com) that, for reasons of consistency, I would like to transfer to another (www.hypnosisaudiomp3s.com) Is it possible to do this while transferring my Google rankings for keywords across to the new site, or would I be better off creating a new site for the mp3 content and creating new content, allowing the new site to grow organically?? Adam
I'm curious to see what the consensus is these days or if there is a good way to do this. My two cents would be there is no longer a quick fix for rebranding a domain name. I'd say if you are going to move you should expect about a year before organic ranks come around in Google. Probably less of a delay in Y and MSN.
I just moved a site from one domain to another [via 301 redirect] and within a couple of weeks the pages on the new domain were ranking.
ResaleBroker: can you provide a few more details? 1) Is the site in a competitive space? 2) Is it ranking in all the engines? If not, which ones? 3) Was the domain you moved to newly registered? 4) How many links were pointing to your site old site when you moved it? 5) How long has it been since the switch? 6) Are you still ranking on the new site after say three months, or is this all very recent? 7) Did you own the new URL for a long time prior to swithing? It'd be great to hear your experience on this. Anyone else who has recent experience would be great to hear from as well. - PT
1) The site does not target competitive terms. [Arizona Manufactured Homes] 2) Ranks: Google (195) Yahoo (2) MSN (1) 3) Yes. 4) There were approximately 300-400 links pointing to the old site's home page. 5) The redirect was approximately three (3) weeks ago. 6) N/A 7) I am the first to register the new URL which was registered on 12/8/04. I should ad that the old site's rank in Google was not far off from what the new site's ranking currently is. I've switched domains in the past using 301 redirects with similar results.
Thanks Resale. Regarding: "I've switched domains in the past using 301 redirects with similar results." That is where my apprehensions come from...the ground has shifted with new sites in the last year or so in Google. There is no denying if from my point of view. Anyone else have experience to share?
