Yeah you make some good points there. Was just a theory idea really and a bad one at that. I didn't mean to make it sound as if I were selling juice though. My point was there is no reason to index a page that has nothing on it. In retrospect though I think its better to add something to the page for the one reason an actual browser might find a quality resource.
We've eliminated the deeplinks option - we feel it just added to editorial frustration. Not worth the effort arguing with submitters about anchor text. Lots of wasted time editing submissions/arguing with submitters. We still add what we think are "Interesting Pages" if we feel they would be of interest and use to our visitors rather than the submitters. Featured Listings - eliminated this option as well. Submitters expect to be able to utilize their preferred anchor text, description and category placement because they've selected this option. Not worth the hassle. Who's directory is it when you allow submitters to dictate how and where a listing is placed? Top Hits - Removed from navigation. Really of no use and prone to abuse. Think about it - it really just invites abuse. Privacy Policy. Added and working on refining this policy. I think it's important to have a privacy policy in place. Terms of Service. Added - another policy that I feel should be available. How do you define your service? A submission guideline is exactly that - a guideline. Have these changes resulted in a reduction of submissions? Probably, but it's a change I'm willing to accept as it includes a noticeable change in rejections as well. I'd say that's the most positive change.
A lot of good changes happening, i will throw into the pot another thing that we will be doing from day one ( not sure if others are doing this and i do not claim to be wrong or right ) It has confused me from day one where it was suggested that the best way to promote for submissions was to use and impliment the words Paid Review and this was the best approach. From where I'm sitting and being an ol timer, i still can't buy it. So we will ( not might or asking if i should ) review a business or site as such as part of the qualification process, but there will be no mistake in that you will be paying to advertise / promte your business in our online resource / directory, calling it what it is My reasonings for this are simple, i cant understand the logic with the current wording and second coming from years in advertising business ( we can and did spend up to 10K a week on it ) It's not an accurate description. When we place an ad in the paper to promote our business or service I don't go to the paper and ask for a review, as a business i want to place an ad, same with radio and TV and i see the web as being no different to this, and in that will use that format. Floppy drives, keep throwing your ideas up, there is no good or bad or people judging, just people sharing ideas and thoughts while we move forward. Creed, some big changes there, with the top hits, one thing we will be doing is similar to what is in most directories and like you deleted but instead of a dial up page there will be a few listings on each page in a text box setup that will list the top hits for that catagory. we will test it out and see how it goes.
OK Idea number 123 part 7 on the table for discussion and feedback. I often have seen questions from people in a similar fashion to one posted recently with titles like ( are directories worth posting to ) ( what directories do i post to ) and threads of similar pattern. I also pop into other forums where the directory is discussed with some unsurity In keeping with the moving forward theme and quality is better than quantity, this afternoon i done a little experiment based on those thoughts, to me the answer was easy, but put this idea forward We already have very good directory rating services, for this example i used Directory Rate & Directory Critic ( there may be other good ones but i am new and appologise if i left you out,but would be welcome to join in ) What i done from there was very simple and like we do for racing where you have 100 people telling you what horse to back. In this we take each persons suggestions and combine them to form a concensus rating, in effect if two or more were saying the same thing then the odds were it was a better outcome. In the sample i took the top 100 in 3 catagories, FREE, REC, & PAID other catagories could be done if wanted The directory rating service had allready rated them so i did not need to do my homework again it was easy top spot got 100 points, bottom spot 1 point. These totals were then cross checked to give a total points with those scoring a combined total of 75 or better making the cut ( this could be done at any level ) Lastly i then took all 3 seperate listings and combined them again to give a Combined concensus. The idea with this listing is it is impartial, it could be say renewed every month and posted into the forum. This list then could be used by web masters, people from other sections and or the general business that wished to get a quick handle on the best directories to place thier ads into. In that it would alo provide links back to the main sources ( the directory raters ) that would or could provide a more detailed list.
