Moving hosts.

I have a few sites hosted by u2-web, they each have a small database with them. Each database is under 1MB in size.

How hard is it to move hosts and keep the sites working fine? I plan on moving to hostgator asap as I've found a good package compared to what I'm paying now.

Total noob in this area but I want to do it myself so I can fo it again if I ever need to.

Sorry if it's been asked before but I've had a quick look and cannot find anything similar that I'm aware of.

Thanks for the reply but I was just looking for information or guidance how to do it myself as I have already got the hostgator account set up.

Just want to transfer my current sites to it so I can cancel the u2-web hosting.

I think I was told they offer 1 free transfer when you sign up, I have 3 sites I need moving so would like to know where to start myself so I can do them in the future or help anyone out who doesn't know how to do it.

Well first you would need to login into cPanel and go to the backups section. Make a backup of all of your sites. Download them and upload them on your HostGator account.

I have been looking and I don't think that u2-web.co.uk actually uses cPanel because I can't see a "backup" section.

If I go into phpmyadmin and 'export' the database would that work?

That would work. You would need to download your files manually upload them and then add the database on HostGator.

Yes that will work for your database. Just make sure to name the DB the same thing and import everything. You can just download all of your other files with FTP and upload them to HostGator. Make sure everything is just right before you get rid of your old account. Good Luck to you :)

Cheers, just downloading the files now and getting the databases from phpmyadmin. Hopefully I won't come across any problems or errors.

Sorry to double post, when i go into myphpadmin and click 'export' and then the database i want.

I have the option to have as a zip, sql file etc etc. The databases are not very big so I guess it doesn't matter which one I select but when I go to my new host and try to 'import' I get an error saying something about failed *username*@localhost or something.

    Any ideas?

Seems like mysql permission problem , use bigdump script to import the database , fast and efficient .

Hostgator is good. Their support staff are very knowledgeable. Create a backup file using the Cpanel backup utility. When in doubt just ask the hostgator support. They will guide you through it.
