I have been reading Sams teach yourself Apache today and trying to set up an Apache server with mixed results. I installed it fine using localhost as my server name and have displayed the 'It Works!' page fine however, the sole purpose of installing Apache was to host my personal website from my computer. That site is currently being hosted by one.com. I have opened the httdp.conf and changed the server name to my personal domain hoping it would now be hosted by me but it isn't working, what the hell do I need to do?? I have spent hours trying to figure this one out but can't seem to get anywhere. Please, PLEASE can someone help me out here or point me in the right direction. I am using windows 7 64bit and the latest release of Apache. Many thanks, Difclass
There are many things you must do in order to host it from home, however, I do not recommend do this. Most ISP's will block port 80 because they do not want people hosting websites from their home connection. I would start by either contacting your host, or, reading their TOS to see if they allow it. The other issue with hosting a site from home is, reliability. Your home connection is not designed for quick uploads in most cases. For the fairly low cost per month, its worth letting a hosting company host your site. If your site does not make any money, then I would suggest you give a free host a try.
