Moving from AS to affiliates

If my AS ads are sending my visitors to a few main advertisers, wouldn't I be wiser to replace AS with my own ads with affiliate links to those sites? It just came to me that I'm looking at this in a very short-sided way. Right now I'm getting excited about a few hundred $$ a month from AS, but it wouldn't take than many buys through my aff link to make that much.

It seems like the potential upside would be a lot higher with affiliate links too - maybe ever more of an exponential growth rather than the flat growth I'll see with AS. Actually the growth on a per unit basis with AS may be even a little downward. Isn't that what this smart pricing is I'm reading about? The more clicks I get, the less I'll be making on each click. With affiliate links, I have a lot more potential upside.

Has anyone else tried this strategy? Since I'm getting AS clicks on the same few AS advertisers, and since I've already got affiliate accounts with a couple of them, I'm thinking about designing some ads that are similar to AS or Yahoo for these same advertisers. Is there any legal issues with me copying the look of an AS or Yahoo ad? Seems not since their ads look very similar to each other.

This may all be very basic stuff to you experience affiliates, but it seems like a brainstorm for me! :D

This isn't true if your clicks convert. If you have bad traffic for adsense, you will have also bad traffic for affiliates (maybe not, if you select the right one).

That wasn't meant as a statement of fact. It was just a comment about smart pricing as I understand it. Perhaps I don't know what it means. I'll search DP to get a better idea about it. Anyway, I've get vert targeted traffic, so it probably doesn't matter wither way BUT...

that doesn't really change my overall question.

    Thanks,

if you can find products that are very related to what your visitors are searching for when viewing your site you should try it. you could rotate affiliate links with Adsense (don't make those links look like AdSense as I think this is not accepted by the new AS TOS) and see what works best. Good luck

That's a cool idea. Where would I find the code to rotate the ads?

I find adsense very very very pathetic. I do less than $20/day from adsense across all my sites. OTOH, I do a lot lot lot more from affiliate programs. It really depends on traffic/demographics though. I know that some guys make serious adsense money though. However, even they complain that adsense is "off and on". Some months are better than others. Affiliate sales pays most of my bills (and that of my midsized offshore company), so unfortunately I can't rely on "off and on" things(given the fact that over the years I have developed an addiction towards having a roof over my head and 3 meals / day).
