    hi,
how hard is it to move a wordpress blof (with about 40 posts) from one host to another? Will it affect the archived posts?
    Thanks

I've just recently moved my blog to another host with no problems...everything remained in tact just the way it was on my previous host. I actually didn't do it myself, though. If you're moving to a well-known host company, a lot offer free site transfers. I switched to Host Gator, and they transferred both my blogs for free within a day and no down-time at all.

It's not to hard, and it's a good thing to learn how to do. But if your new hosting provider will do it for you then you may want to go with that option.

If you decide to do it yourself then here is the basic process.

    1. Download all files on the old host to your local computer.

    2. Download a copy of your mysql database to your computer. The export function in phpmyadmin will do this.

    3. Upload all the files to where wordpress will be on your new host and import the database.

    4. After you have a working copy of your blog on the new host then you will change your DNS record so that your domain points to your new host.

    5. Once the DNS propagates then you can remove the site from you old host. But Make Sure You Don't Do It Until Then!!!

That was all very brief, so if you need more info on any step then just shout.

Thank you for posting these details, as I'm going to have to do this soon. Both hosts use cPanel but I'm assuming there are SQL export tools available there as well. Anything specific I should watch out for here?

I just did this recently, and it was a move from an entirely different domain. It was very easy - exactly what YoungMaster just said...except in my case, I had to manually edit the database in 3 spots to remove the old URL and type in the new one.

Well you can click a link from cPanel and get int PHPmyadmin. It's simple too, not to worry.

    Best tutorial I've seen:

I am curious if using a custom permalink structure on the old blog. Will the custom permalink structure be restored, or matched by just importing the database? Or will it need to be set again to match from within the dashboard?

yes, you'll get the same identical site. You won't notice any differences, it's a complete move.

first i will do remote backup in cpanel and tranfer it to the new hosting. everything will be backed up and my new hosting provider will restore it for me. no need to worry anything. the database is still the same. the wordpress files are still the same.

but to make it safe, it is better for you to have a backup of your database and backup also all your Wordpress files (including plugins and themes folder) to your pc. and then upload it to the new server.
