I have a wordpress blog setup as blog.mydomain.com, and also the main website mydomain.com In hindsight it I think it would have been better to set up the blog as mydomain.com/blog to give greater seo benefit for mydomain.com. The issue is making this change. Has anyone moved a blog like this before, e.g. change from sub domain .blog to domain directory /blog, and if so can you feedback on how if worked for you re loss of search traffic and difficulties to change. Your feedback is much aprpeciated Thanks, Gordano
Here are instructions: http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress Yes, you may lose some traffic from referring links, but you can make changes to your htaccess file to redirect referring traffic to the old links to new links. http://www.martinbrinkmann.com/admin/webmaster-tools/how-to-redirect-broken-links-with-htaccess/ You will have to wait for the Search Engines to re index your content. With the htaccess adjustments and sumitting a new sitemap, you can keep this to a minimum.
I've had nothing but trouble with the instructions that are on the codex. The simplest and most reliable method for moving sites that I've found is to just pony up the cash for Backup Buddy (the coolest thing is that it moves the site, content, themes, plugins, etc).
