This is where you need to join communities and work around that. You will have alot of competitor for sure.

You know your just begging to get busted, and your website shut down,,, right? What your asking about is totally illegal, your site will probably get delisted from google (and the rest of the search engines), if your server is in the USA, its wont be online very long.

Why dont you start a movie review site instead.

Technecally, as I understand it, he is not about to do anything illegal. He will be hosting these files on another, public, server (hence the "uploading" part) and providing links on his website. And btw, Google won't give two f**cks about you and delist you beacuse you are hosting some copyrighted files. Anyhow, OP, try zshare, they seem to be pretty cool.

You better be carefull with that and do some research on it.First make sure you´ll buy the domain form an offshore register and then buy an offshore hosting as well.If you do that you won´t get in trouble for hosting copywrited material. Also you will be in a constant batlle with other competitors since lots of peoples are doing that.

PS : How do you plan to monetize that site?

If you link to copyright protected material, your promoting it - regardless if its hosted on your server or not.

Wouldn't start with copyrighted material if you want to build a sustainable business.

Well lets not jump to conclusions shall we? In fact this is still widely debatable (e.g. Pirate Bay trial. Please note, that although the pirates were found guilty, the case is far from over. The defendants have made an appeal, based on the notion that no files were hosted on the servers (since this was the original accusation). Hearing will start in late 2010). Also, have a look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pirate_Bay_trial#The_Pirate_Bay

Basically, based on what you are saying, Google, Yahoo, Bing, all the other search engines plus a ton of media sites are operating illegally.
See the issue is not as black and white as you might think.

Some may not have the resources thepiratebay has at its disposal.

To the op: I wouldn't start such a site if I were you. It's legality is questionable, competition is tight, just a few ways to monetize it. A movie review site would work better.

Did you even read the article??
The pirate bay, first of all, didn't posses any extraordinary resource. The pirate bay=4 geeky dudes, mate. Second of all, them chaps were accused of hosting the files on their servers, which OP will not do. Imagine the logistics of suing everybody who links to copyrighted material. As I said again, the companies will have to sue Googel, Bing, Yahoo, BBC and whatnot. It won't happen. Read the article. Read about the defense. And honestly, are seriously telling me that OP's site will be as big as pirate bay.

Another thing. Movie reviews? Man there is rottentomatoes.com already. No point to do a movie review site. Just upload some TV shows and movies OP and monetize them with cpalead. It's a good daily income.
    Cheers
