Stats came out years ago that it was Basketball. Surprised me because it's not a big sport in NZ but if they counted as "players" all those guys who shoot hoops in parks then the US has a huge impact on the total.

I'd have thought cycling or golf would be high on the list - participation rates in those sports is very high. Everyone I know cycles for leisure - either road or mountain biking.
