The best back link generation technique is to submit articles in different article directory or submit you site info in web directories.
I find the best method is to generate a piece of linkbait, then promore the article heavily. If you content is good then you can easily get 100s of high quality links. If you are interested in how I do it then feel free to PM me.
Personally, I think if your content is interesting your viewers will spread the content on your site which will give you good back-link.
Sigs work for me, so does blog commenting, and sometimes I just ask my readers or my facebook followers... that seems to help sometimes too.
