Moron Imprisoned for Rude Online Behavior

The British government is sending Sean Duffy to jail for 18 weeks for being a jerk online.

This seems like a waste of precious taxpayer dollars to me. On the other hand, if seems like this kid would really benefit from a serious ass whipping.

The freedom of speech argument wins out with me, and I can't support the crowns decision to imprison anyone for "sending a communication of an indecent or offensive nature." I don't feel any sympathy for this dirt-bag, but I do feel sympathy for the Britons who are now poorer due to the cost of his trial and incarceration.

    What do you think?

Yes, Sean Duffy could have picked a worse place to exercise his freedom of speech than Britain. On the other hand, he could have picked some better places too.

I think freedom of speech should preclude him going to jail for the offense he performed, but I'd have been supportive of UK authorities exercising their free speech by publishing his name and address with a Google map to his house. What happened afterward would be worse than 18 days in jail and much more satisfying for the families of the deceased.

That said... funny that he looks exactly like what you'd expect a troll to look. Anyone checked to make sure Gworld isn't in a UK jail?

It is still called Spanish, even in Mexico.

As has been said, what he really needs is a good ass kicking. I wish I thought enough of the government to allow that sort of thing as an official punishment.

I think this is just not a case for criminal sanctions. Public shaming is more than appropriate though.

    Thank-you Tray.

Fair calls. I think naming and shaming is a little too rough justice, though I may add, "naming" was done a long time ago and he's still roaming the streets (well he was). I remember it making news (here) at the time...the guy was 20c short of a dollar and did deserve "a" punishment of some sort in order to show others it doesn't go un-noticed. - now that's a big advert that will hopefully stop others from doing it. And public "opinion" gets its guaranteed revenge whereas he would have got away scott free if left to the public (as shown by him still walking around). - knowing what he did, he needed to be stopped somehow.

I was trying to look up the law in the UK, and I think this is it. Anyway, really sad story, in the video, it said this individual would purposefully watch the news for victims, just to try and hurt strangers that had a death in the family. I don't care for the description as a mere "troll." He seems worse to me, very sadistic. However, it could be a slippery slope from supporting the law implemented in this case, to trying to control all kinds of offensive freedom of speech. I don't know if the law I linked to is what they used to throw him in jail, but the wording of it seems very vague.

They don't send psychotic criminals to mental asylum instead of jail anymore?

This is a bad precedent. The internet is one of the few places we have left where freedom of speech is still allowed. Now they want to rob us of this too? If you say anything negative about any identifiable group you can go to jail for "promoting hate".Now people in the U.K. will be censored online. Are we not taking political correctness a bit too far here? If someone offends you online simply block them.If it's on a site then the site can ban yes? Let's try and keep big brother(governments) out of our lives as much as possible.
    And 18 weeks,isn't that a bit much?

    It's a burning question..
Is there a line between "Free Speech" and "Hate Speech". Does freedom of speech allow you to spread hateful speech?

Tell me Linda, why racism is not free speech?

The definition of racism as I understand it is a preconceived bias and a preformed opinion based solely on racial profiling. This is patently unfair and goes against the grain of any decent fair minded individual. It is so repugnant that we simply cannot tolerate it.It is cruel, unjust and clearly flawed in nature. We can complicate the issue of racism, break it down, dissect it but at the end of the day racism denies the person the ability to be considered as an equal. Also makes the racist hard, insensitive to pain and therefore dehumanizes him.Racism ought to be fought therefore for the sake of both.Free speech yes,but with the caveat of common sense.

But at the end, it's my right to speak as I see it fit..
If in my opinion you are lesser human than me, shouldn't I have the right to say it?
That's my freedom of speech, innit? If you get offended, block me, ignore me, just don't listen to me.. Why people get thrown in jail for racist speech?

Are you okay with jailing people for being racist?

Because people with mental problems cost money to take care of. We emptied out all the asylums in California decades ago. Many of our homeless people are homeless due to mental issues.

It is constitutionally protected free speech, which is why the "Christians" who protest military funerals of homosexual soldiers are allowed to continue spewing their hatred. Its what give's IsraeI the right to go on and on and on about the evils of the Jews.

Get over it,control is a part of it.We are nothing more than highly evolved primates. We need to be controlled. Why do you think we have armies, police, jails, courts etc.? A mature person realizes that we cannot have total freedom. As a hate filled aggressive species we have lost the rights to that.If you are a parent and your 3 year old is about to ride across the road on his tricycle do you just sit there in the name of freedom? No you go out there and pull him back....control.....it's all in how you perceive it......again get over it.That's life.....that's society's rules.
Some people use the freedom of speech card to commit crap.Nope...not buying into that.

But jailing people costs money as well.. How about shipping them off to Australian outbacks? 90% of Australians love immigrants, don't they? (teeheehee, sorry Bushranger!!)

But I'm perfectly okay if IsraeI gets shipped off to Australian Outbacks!!

    Wow..
I love it when people have emotional outbursts..

But you have answered yourself in your outburst..

I guess, my job is done.. Thank you everyone..

"Hateful messages against a dead person"? O.k. put down the shot glass, put the cork back in the bottle.Place the bottle back on the shelf.Go down the hallway, crawl into bed and sleep it off.In the morning all will be well.....maybe a bit of a headache but you'll be all right:)

Nice try with Sarcasm, doesn't work well though.. See the edit.

PS: And I see, you are adopting to the P&R standard really fast. Continuous anger, selective reading and taking a line out of context and finally retort with somewhat personal comment .. Good going Linda. :)
You will be a P&R ace pretty soon.
