I was talking to someone online about gaining links and they stated the following : Does anyone have any evidence to support this statement?
I think it will always pay to have more links. Search engines could never penalise you for having lots of links otherwise your competitors could give you loads of poor links and harm your ranking. I would always concentrate on good links anyway - these will get you traffic rather than just being counted by search engines.
This article certainly gives an interesting view to the topic http://www.wwwcoder.com/main/parentid/285/site/5033/266/default.aspx
of course this is guys site who wrote it http://www.rankingyourwaytothebank.com/ Where do you think it ranks?
The concept of link relevance has been in the works for quite a while now -- given that Google already has the technology to determine themes in from page content, it may already be part of the algorithm for all we know -- if not, it is only a matter of time until it is, IMO. However, there need be no "penalty" applied per se, any more than there is a "duplicate content penalty" - all Google need do is apply a filter to discount such links so that the irrelevant links add no weight.
