I have a web site that has more backlinks that the sites above it in Google, what else would I need to look at to try and out rank these sites for the given keyword?

More backlinks does not mean too much, it's the quality of those inbound links you have to take in consideration too.

Apart from that, if you are ranking already more or less well and you want to outsource the competition, what about some on page/site SEO? Well done? If yes, well you'll need more links with the right anchor text, but I personally would try some onpage tweeking first. (less work and faster results)

What sort of onpage seo could I look into?

Also what makes a quality inbound link? I have my site being linked to from relevant sites. What else is there to it?

High number backlinks is not enough; it must be relevant and quality links.

You have probably heard of the phrase ' Content is King' so your internal on-page optimisation has to reference this, meaning your content has to be relevant to the product / service you are providing.

You then have to display his through titles, heading etc.

Sometimes, it's really hard to understand google's algorithm used for the SERP. Maybe it could be because the combination of keywords are right even though it has fewer back links or the other aspect such as use of the right anchor text for the back links. All these small little things were taken into account.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not so sure that backlinks effect PR as I have 2 sites with between 5,000 and 10,000 backlinks and no PR.

Has anyone any ideas on tools to use to analyze other sites?

Its not the number of links but the quality of those links. You might have 10,000 links but how many of those are forum signatures, blogroll, directory links and the cheap links that everyone can get. If its easy to get and and accessible to a number of people then it probably isn't worth much.

Google doesn't credit all the links instantly, it can take time to see the effect of a link. As already mentioned, it's the quality that matters over quantity. Also, age of the site above you can also be a factor. If it's an old site with quality links and content then it'll some good amount of work to outrank it.

The links contain the keywords as the anchor text.

What is classed as a "quality link" that everybody is talking about?

Someone mentioned above that blogroll links are no good. What happens if I have a MMO blog and have blogroll links from John Chow, Pro Blogger and ShoeMoney, are these links then still classes as rubbish? or would they now be quality links?
