No you don't, loads of mods work for free because they like the forum they help out on :)

The only forum where you have to pay someone to do something is on a forum where the people have to be on like 24/7 and help out the members of the forum. Like support and stuff. For example, the people on DP do just this, yet, I don't think they get paid, so it should really be looked over again. They really deserve to get paid. Right Guys?

Anyone that just read the last few sentences should have just gotten an A in sucking up 101, i believe :)

mods are not always paid, but then it is your forum so you have to decide! perhaps you should make the most useful and dedicated poster of you forum as a moderator, so you have to make mods as per the time zones so that your mods don't have to stay online the whole night!
you can get a few of your friends from dp as a moderator! in case you want to pay, many of us are ready:D

most people pick mods from the members they already have, they dont get paid. they get some extra powers and a feel good factor, thats what most do it for. and because they like your forum

Are there any good / active members of your forum that you trust and could recruit directly. Most mods I know are volunteers - doing it for the respect within the community, and perks like a private section / bigger PM inbox.

Well, it's always better to find people who are intrinsically motivated to be moderators, rather than doing it for the sake of money. They are often more dedicated and loyal to the forum.
For the record, I've never ever asked for any money in return for moderating a forum.
If I really like a forum, I will volunteer my services for free. :)

The mods here are not paid. Although, we probably should be, for all of the crap we have to put up with lately ...Any how, like others have mentioned you want trusted members and/or friends to mod your forum if at all possible. If you can afford to pay them, do so.

Never announce on your forum that you need mods. Because you may get a lot of applications, and you will have to reject some. Never make your users unhappy, because they are the life blood of a forum.

Never make anyone who asks you to make him a moderator, a moderator. Because he / she is more interested in the power and not in helping the community.

Do not go on adding moderators, unless there is a need for it. Because it will create you a lot of head ache at the end.

In case you really need a moderator, carefully watch your forums and find out who all are the best members of your forum. Those who try to help others, those who command the respect of other members, those who know what they are talking about and what is going on in your forum. If you find such a person, pm him and ask him whether he would like to moderate your forum. Its human psychology that people love power, so most probably he / she will be more than willing to help you. He gets more power and respect and you get a good moderator.

In my opinion, moderators are not usually paid. I am of the opinion that they should get paid on hourly basis.

You can usually pay then per hour or offer them a share on your forum's revenue. Your Forum's earning should be attractive though.
