Moderator issues - What to do in this situation?

Ok, I have 2 moderators that are boyfriend and girfriend in real life. They have a child together... but they have recently broken up and the female mod has came to me and told me that the male has physically abused her. Now I have a very low opinion of men who beat women... and I believe her that he's beaten her... but I have no real evidence. I know its none of my business what goes on in the personal lives of my moderators... but I really don't want a moderator which I have a low opinion of. So, I asked him if he has abused her and he denied it.

Would it be fair of me to demod him on the word of his ex? I believe her completely but I still don't think it would be fair in the eyes of others that I didn't require evidence. Would it seem like I'm a dictator or something?

What would YOU do in this situation?

Either stay well out of it and hope the problem resolves itself (unfortunately this would probably mean one resigning) or fire them both. Maybe I am just mean though.

Its not a matter of it resolving itself or not. Its more a matter of me having a low opinion of people who beat on their significant other. As a forum owner, you should have a HIGH opinion of your moderators, right? You wouldn't have a murderer or a child molester as a moderator would you? THATS the issue I'm having with this.

Well, as you have had no real life dealings with either of them I don't see how you can be expected to make a decision on such a big thing. It's really up to how comfortable you feel (forget your users for the time being); can you work with this guy? On one had you could be firing someone who has actually done nothing wrong but if you take no action you might not be able to live with yourself.

Thanks for your thoughts on the subject. I'd like to hear the thoughts of other forum admins before I decide what to do.

Ask one of them to leave.

i had some issues with "drama" with a couple of my moderators earlier this year.. Because I didnt want to 'single out' any of the mods, two of which were 'very close', i just de'modded all of them.. probably a bit of an over reacation, but it did the trick.. a while later, i hired back two of them..
